AA Auckland New Zealand - Alcoholics Anonymous

IF YOU ARE NEW AND YOU THINK A FAMILY MEMBER HAS A PROBLEM WITH ALCOHOL

First off, is to fully accept, that what 95% of the public perceives an alcoholic to be - is NOT the case. The normal perception of an alcoholic is the "down & out homeless hobo, who is drinking in the park from a brown paper packet". It is estimated that one in 10 people who drink are alcoholic. They maybe doctors, rock stars, policemen, lawyers, housewives, politicians, builders, sailors, butchers, bakers and candlestick makers. Just like every other disease, it does not discriminate. Approximately 40% of AA members today are female.

It is important to understand that alcoholism is a disease..... Alcoholics Anonymous is based on the book by the same name, also known as the Big Book. A chapter in this book is devoted to the wives of alcoholics. At the time it was written there were no women members of AA. Therefore this chapter also applies to husbands. For family members this chapter may help, but it is possible that a better understanding may be obtained from Al-Anon/Aalteen.
